In July 2012, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution and declared that 2014 would be the ‘International Year of Crystallography,’ (IYCr2014) to commemorate 100 years since the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of X-ray diffraction by crystals. IYCr2014 also commemorates the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s observation in 1611 of the symmetrical forms of ice crystals, which began the wider study of the role of symmetry in matter.

A website has been launched to allow organizations worldwide to coordinate their activities and initiatives, and events associated with the International Year of Crystallography are listed and can be accessed through The Barcelona Knowledge Hub of the Academia Europaea will contribute to this international commemoration.
