Barcelona Disputatio 2013

The opening event of the Barcelona Knowlegde Hub took place on November 28 at the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona City Council, with a scientific debate on Social and state-of-the-art medicine in commemoration of the 750th anniversary of the Barcelona Disputatio.

Speakers Thomas Pogge, President of the Health Impact Fund and Director of the Global Justice Program at Yale University, and Mara Dierssen, neuroscientist and group leader of the Systems Biology Programme at the Centre for Genomic Regulation, shared their views on the past, present and future of medicine, drug development and their impact in society worldwide. The audience also had the opportunity to address questions to the speakers in a debate moderated by the Academic Director of the Barcelona Knowledge Hub, Prof. Genoveva Martí.

The event was chaired by the Mayor of Barcelona and the President of the Academia Europaea, Prof. Lars Walløe, with the participation of the Minister of Economy of Knowledge of the Government of Catalonia (MAE) and the Vicepresident of the Academia Europaea. The President of the Academia Europaea stated that “the main function of the academies today is to promote transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific activities […] going across the borders between the natural sciences and the social sciences and the humanities”, one of the Barcelona Knowledge Hub’s main objectives.

The Barcelona Disputatio on Social and state-of-the-art medicine has been the first of a series of Disputationes that the Barcelona Knowledge Hub will be organising every year.
