BUILDING BRIDGES 2019

(The 31st AE Annual Conference)

 Barcelona, 23-25 October, 2019

Invitation

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of President Cloetingh and all MAEs, I would like to invite you to come to Barcelona on the 23-25 of October, 2019, to participate in the Building Bridges 2019 Conference. I wish to extend a special invitation to the new members elected in the years 2018 and 2019, and also to our new Georgian friends from the recently inaugurated Tbilisi Knowledge Hub.

All Members, friends, non-members and local scholars and students are invited to attend the sessions and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the friendly city of Barcelona. As George Orwell wrote in Homage to Catalonia (1938), “I would sooner be a foreigner in Spain than in most countries. How easy it is to make friends in Spain!”

Under the title of Building Bridges 2019, you will find below a brief overview of the Conference structure and format and a foretaste of things to come. The lectures, activities and online registration are announced on the website: http://buildingbridges-acadeuro.org/

In addition to the scientific sessions, there are two social activities that are worth mentioning.

The first one is the all-new President’s Dinner. This is open to all Conference attendees, and in particular to our new Members of 2018 and 2019. The dinner will be held on the evening of October 23 at the Norai Restaurant, next to the Gothic building of the Royal Shipyards (Reales Atarazanas). Participation in the dinner will involve an additional cost, not included in the general Conference registration fee. (Currently all spots are fully booked.)

Finally, as it is an AE tradition to organise a post-Conference field trip, this year we will travel southwest by coach bus to the walled ducal city of Montblanc, an important trading centre in medieval times; this is reflected in its many Gothic architectural gems, and also its Jewish Quarter (call), which was well-known in the Middle Ages all over the Iberian Peninsula. Close to the Prades mountain range, the area is home to many geological sites. The outing includes a traditional Catalan lunch, as well as a tour of the 12th-century Cistercian monastery of Poblet. The field trip will be held on October 25 (all day) and will entail an additional cost. (Booking can be done online at the time of registration.)

The logistic organisation, registration and payment of the Conference will be handled by Manners Conferences and Events, an excellent travel and tourist agency that provided us with efficient and smooth management of last year’s Annual Conference.

Information regarding the event is available at: http:/buildingbridges-acadeuro.org/

Registration ends on October 10, 2019. Please see the following pages for more information on the structure and development of the Conference.

We hope that you will enjoy the excellent Scientific Programme of Building Bridges 2019, the 31st Annual Conference of the Academia Europaea that will again be held in Barcelona and hosted by our Barcelona Knowledge Hub.

We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona in October! Remember, “How easy it is to make friends in Spain!”

Sincerely yours,

Ricard Guerrero
