MUSIC IN THE CLOISTER

at the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC)

The concert series, Music in the Cloister, organised by the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC), offers the chance to enjoy unique performances of Catalan musical repertoire by high-calibre musicians in the beautiful cloister of the seventeenth-century Convalescent Home, a lovely example of Catalan civil neoclassical architecture where the Barcelona Knowledge Hub of Academia Europaea is located.

Many of the compositions featured have been reconstructed following original musicological research and were either unknown or unpublished previously, and all hold great value for the history of music in Catalonia. This reconstruction involves three creative elements: sonic creation through the composer, recovery of the original sound, and interpretation by the performer within the boundaries of technique and individual freedom. The series is directed by Romà Escalas, member of IEC, with the support of AE-BKH as collaborators on one concert in each edition.

The different concerts comprising Music in the Cloister highlight different performance styles, separated in time and/or space, and draw on the current musicological trends of recovery and connection.
